🌱 Dragon Slayers: Evolution 🌱

This took a long time, but it was so fun to practice drawing full bodies (and cats 😭) for once! I actually sketched out the concept for these 3 pieces months ago— and recently decided to commit to proper drawings :D

[These pieces were for pure nostalgia, and to revisit media that was part of my artistic journey as a tween! I know the series has major flaws— the treatment of female characters, tasteless fanservice and poor relationship writing, to name a few. I despise these aspects, of course.

I want to make it clear that I drew this art to explore something that shaped my younger self's work. I don't condone Mashima's writing choices, nor did I even keep up with the later arcs of the story and the spin-off(s). Thank you for reading!]

I think that Hawks is super into alternative people.

Like I think he sees someone with a haircut that’s a little out there or piercings or full sleeves of tattoos or covered in chains and studs and it makes his brain buzz a little. He sees someone who isn’t afraid to go against “the norm” and he’s immediately drawn to them.

Because he’s the model hero. He’s always doing what’s right. Doing what’s expected of him. He’s charming and personable and everyone loves him, but it’s a show. It’s pomp and circumstance. The Commission molded him to be this way and he knows that, but it’s not like he can just stop now. He can’t go against their expectations for him.

However, he can and does pursue these people. He can’t help it. He’s fascinated by them. He wishes that he could do what they do. The most he can get away with is wearing some flashy jewelry every once in a while. He wants to feel the vibration of a tattoo gun on his bicep. He wants wants to wear something that’ll make people stop and stare and not just because he’s a famous hero.

He just wants to experience little doses of freedom and when he meets you, he feels like maybe he finally can.

Hi! This might be of an odd question, but is using one's own short hair something people do in historical costuming at all, in your experience? Everyone I see seems to have long hair to recreate hairstyles with and I'm more just interested in the clothes/don't like wigs. Is having/using short hair something people do? (When I say short I mean it's like a pixie cut, there's really nothing that could be done with my hair)

It's not necessarily commonplace- a lot of the short-haired feminine-presenting people I know either wear wigs or stick to eras where their length was more fashionable (1790s-1820s, 1920s, etc). But it's certainly not historically inaccurate.

Because, surprisingly enough...some women liked having short hair even when it wasn't popular. Simply searching "Victorian woman short hair" will supply you with tons of photos, and there are definitely portraits of similar ladies from earlier periods. And while some of those women were likely getting over an illness (women's hair was often cut in an attempt to bring down a fever), my research indicates that some kept their hair that way entirely by personal choice.

It may not be what laypeople expect, but it definitely Happened.

And if you aren't in it for the Full Look, only the clothes...tell people that. They can get onboard or piss off.
